Pupil Premium

Sports Funding

At Warwick Academy, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievements of all our children.

What is the School Sports Premium?

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 to improve provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport in Academy’s. The funding – provided jointly by the Department for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to Academy head teachers. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools.

What have schools done?

From September 2013, schools have been held to account over how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding. Ofsted has strengthened the coverage of PE and sport within the ‘Inspectors’ handbook and supporting guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision.

One year on, Ofsted will carry out a survey reporting on the first year’s expenditure of additional funding and its impact.

How is Warwick spending its funding?

We have audited our provision of PE and sought the views of our children and teachers to ensure a clear plan to make the most effective use of funding.

  • Prioritised the teaching of Games
  • Updating our PE curriculum and providing new schemes of work for our teachers to use
  • Subsidising before and after school clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • Providing more coaching and training for our teachers to improve PE lessons
  • Improving our PE equipment to ensure its high quality
  • Continuing to work with the School Sports Partnership to enable our children to participate in local PE festivals and events

What impact is our sports premium having on PE at Warwick?

As a result of buying into a package with a local secondary school, Weavers Academy, for the second year running we are hoping to build links further. Again we aim to use the expertise of their staff to support our staff with training opportunities. Year 1 have already benefited from some teach teaching and coaching to deliver outstanding PE lessons to KS1 children.

This has enabled us to achieve our aims on our action plan; team teaching, up-skilling teachers, teacher training, taking part in new sports (extra-curricular and curriculum time) and increasing our participation in competitions (please find attached our records of clubs and activities and events). As a result we have achieved the Sainsbury’s School Game Bronze Mark.

This year we are looking to improve this further and hopefully achieve silver or even gold. Also a priority this year is to immerse our children even further within the school games competitions.

We will again be using the funding to subsidise after/before school clubs. Over the previous academic year we used two sports agencies: Pacesetters and Northamptonshire Sport. This academic year we are currently using Premier Sport to run clubs both during and after school aswell as overseeing the delivery of Year 6 PE. More recently we have also secured some subsidised karate lessons offering 30 minutes a week for KS2 children in years 3-5 aswell as offering a lunch time club for children to progress and work towards their grading’s and hopefully a competition against other schools.

In the summer term we plan to take our year 4’s swimming again.

Looking forward, the sports clubs run by our staff are becoming more competitive too! Staff members are taking it upon themselves to organise fixtures with other schools. We also have in school events set up to also improve sportsmanship and encourage and healthy and active lifestyle.
